Paper Cut Outs

Something that I have really got into during the first year of my degree is the technique of drawing using cut out paper shapes. It amazes me how you can create interesting pieces using just plain white paper an a scalpel (don't get me wrong though- coloured paper works well too!). I was really pleased with these few pieces, not least because I managed to keep them in one piece without them breaking!

Finished Album Cover

This was the final outcome of my album cover design project. I went with the band 'shark speed' (see top left hand corner of the front cover), the title 'the world is not a cold dead place' and record label 'fly records' (see bottom left hand corner of the back cover). The record label logo is an etching which was the first print process that I used and the second process I used was the laser cutting for the front cover photograph. For the title I designed an 'alive' world- a world with lots of life on it- children, animals, tress etc but then cut it out of very plain white mount board. I then photographed it in a grave yard (you can see the grave stones in the background of the photos) but I photographed it with lots of living flowers in the fore ground. I was going to produce it in colour but in the end decided that black and white worked pretty well. I'm not quite sure what the end outcome is.. is the world a cold dead place? You decide...

Album cover design ideas

These are some of the ideas that I experimented with for band names 'shark speed' and 'daisy chainsaw' and for record labels 'hell cat records' and 'alternative tentacles records'. I particularly like the 'alternative tentacles' one but I think perhaps over all I was a little bit too literal with my designs!

The World Is Not A Cold Dead Place

This was a module that we did on 'print processes' and 'laser cutting' the brief was to design an album cover. We had to choose from a list of album titles, band titles and record labels provided and produce an album cover using at least 2 of the print processes that we had learnt to use at the beginning of that module. These photos were taken for the album title 'the world is not a cold dead' place using a mount board laser cut out that I had made.

Bookbinding Module

This was a bookbinding 'mini module' as part of a bigger module entitled 'me, myself and I'. We got taught several different ways of binding books by hand including an accordion fold book, a post bound book and a chinese stab bound book. We had to fill the books with certain content about ourselves such as a time line of our life, 'me by numbers' and 'our favourite things'. We had to produce a final outcome to the project- I produced a little set of various hand bound books with how to make the book as it's content. I made a little bookcase to house them together in.

some more repeating patterns

Here are a selection of some of my repeating patterns that I have done over the last year or so. I have used some of them for greetings cards. I quite like the idea of getting them printed onto things such as mugs or books!

screen printing 'out of context'

Here are some of the printed results from the repeating patterns in the previous post. The module title was 'out of context'~ we had to pick two objects for this project, I picked an i pod and a saw and to fit in with the topic title I printed them onto random every day items. Printing onto 3D items wasn't always easy and some items turned out much better than others~ the plasters are my favourite!

repeating patterns

These
repeating patterns are from my foundation year. This was when I first discovered how much I enjoyed creating a simple image and then transforming it by shrinking and repeating it using photoshop- more variation can be added by changing the colour of one of the images.I initially created these patterns as images for screen printing.
